Two licensed PTs in the same ZIP code can have wildly different qualifications. Our specialists break down what those letters after their names actually mean.

Dr. Renata Vasquez, DPT, OCS
NYU Langone Orthopedics — 14 years experience
"After a total knee replacement, your PT's experience with post-surgical protocols matters more than their location. The first 6 weeks set the trajectory for your entire recovery. Ask specifically: how many post-TKR patients do you see per week?"

Marcus Chen, DPT, CSCS, FAAOMPT
Hospital for Special Surgery — 11 years experience
"A DPT is the entry-level doctorate — every licensed PT has one. An OCS means they passed a board specialty exam in orthopedics. FAAOMPT means they completed fellowship training in manual therapy. For a rotator cuff tear, you want at least OCS."

Those letters
matter.
Your discharge papers say "PT 3x/week." They don't tell you which type of PT, or why the difference between a DPT and an FAAOMPT could change your outcome. Here's the plain-language breakdown.
DPT
Doctor of Physical Therapy
Required to practice. A 3-year postgraduate clinical doctorate. Every licensed PT in the US holds this degree.
What it means for you
They completed rigorous clinical training. The baseline credential — necessary, but not differentiating.
Best For
General PT needs, post-surgical follow-up, standard injury recovery
OCS
Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist
Awarded by the ABPTS after 2,000+ hours of orthopaedic clinical experience plus a rigorous specialty exam.
What it means for you
Proven orthopaedic focus. Only ~4% of PTs hold this. Means they've been tested — not just trained.
Best For
Knee/hip replacement recovery, complex joint injuries, spine conditions
FAAOMPT
Fellow, American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual PT
The highest credential in manual physical therapy. Requires completion of a post-doctoral fellowship program with clinical mentorship.
What it means for you
Elite manual therapy training. Fewer than 1,800 active FAAOMPTs in the United States.
Best For
Chronic pain, cervical/lumbar spine, complex post-surgical stiffness, when other PT has stalled
CSCS
Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist
Granted by the NSCA. Bridges the gap between rehab and return-to-sport performance training.
What it means for you
They can take you from "recovered" to "performing." Especially relevant for athletes.
Best For
ACL return-to-sport, rotator cuff rehab in athletes, performance-focused recovery

"My surgeon gave me a list of three PT clinics and told me to "call around." I spent three days playing phone tag. TherapistCatalog showed me who was board-certified, who took my Medicare supplement, and who had an opening this week. I booked in 4 minutes."
Sandra Kowalski
Post-TKR Patient, 67 · Astoria, NY
"I needed someone who understood athletes, not just patients. The specialty filter let me find a CSCS-credentialed PT who used dry needling. The credential guide on this page explained why that mattered before I even called. That education made me a better patient."

Derek Fontaine
Weekend Athlete, 38 · Midtown East, NY
"At 11pm I was Googling "best physical therapist near me" for my 74-year-old father. Most directories gave me lists with no useful information. This one showed me who specialized in geriatric care, who took Medicaid, and who had the best patient reviews. I found David Thornton in 10 minutes."
